Chalkboard Marker Phone Case

SUPPLIES:

  • Plain phone cases

– These can be found at stores like Five Below or Dollar Tree. If you’re looking for bulk to use as gifts, try Amazon).

  • Metallic Chalkboard Markers

– I prefer the metallic chalkboard markers by American Crafts brand which can be found at Target, Staples or Wal-Mart. These markers are acid free and permanent with a rich opaque ink. They come in all kinds of colors so you can have fun experimenting with different design ideas.

  • Sketchbook
  • Pencil
  • Craft Sealer or Finish (optional)

– Sealers will keep the design you create with your markers from scratching or washing off. You can opt for a clear acrylic spray or use Mod-Podge matte sealer which can be painted on using a smooth brush.

Picturephonecase_black4Before you get started drawing with these permanent markers on your case, it’s important to develop an idea. So begin by opening a sketchbook and tracing an outline of the case.

Use this outline as a guide and practice drawing whatever design you choose. I chose to write an inspiring message as encouragement throughout the day, but you can get as creative as you like. Doodle “C’est La Vie” or “Bonjour” if you’re dreaming of a trip to Paris. Check Pinterest for great ideas for uplifting quotes or you can also use some of the best quotes from the books or movies you love. Draw an outline of some of your favorite shapes or play around with patterns. Write a heartfelt “thank you” note to a friend and use this case as an unconventional gift. The ideas are endless, but don’t rush the process. You don’t have to be the best artist and your design doesn’t have to perfect. The little flaws are what make this case something special, a one-of-a-kind item that can’t be found in a store.

I practiced drawing the same design several times before I felt comfortable enough drawing on the case. Practice in pencil first to come up with a nice composition and then once you’ve got your design, draw it again and again with your marker.

If you mess up on the case, don’t panic. You can always take the easy option and Make Your Own Phone Case on a website like getcustomphonecase.com instead! I understand that making a phone case can be a bit of a hassle so ordering one online might be a better idea for some of you. If you do make an error though, figure out a way to incorporate your little mistake into your design. If that doesn’t work, depending on the texture of your case, you may be able to scratch or wipe off your mistake. Just be gentle and careful when trying to do so.

When you’re finished drawing on your design, you may use a craft sealer or finish to protect your case from water or scratches. I opted to use the clear acrylic spray, using only one light coat, but you may choose to apply two coats. Just be sure you’re laying down a towel and spraying far enough away so that you don’t overdo it, and make sure you’re also in a well-ventilated room.

Paper Heart Earrings

For this DIY, you’ll need:

  • Red Cardstock
  • Fiskars Heart Paper Punch
  • Elmer’s Craft glue stick
  • Earring backs
  • Hot glue gun

Picture

You can definitely do this craft while catching on the latest episode of your guilty pleasure TV show. Punch out at least 12 hearts for each earring using your Fiskars heart punch. Begin gluing your hearts together with your glue stick. You don’t need to use a lot of glue, just use enough to cover the whole heart. Once you’ve glued together two equal stacks of tiny hearts, use just a dab of hot glue on the flat part of your earring back. Quickly place the earring back on your heart stack, pressing very gently. If you press too hard, the glue will spill over and become sloppy. That’s it, you’re all done!

This is a great DIY gift to hand out to your friends on Valentine’s Day. They’ll just love it!
