How to Make Paper Tassels

Hey lovelies!  Ready to make some paper tassels?  I love these things.  I can put therm on any gift box to give it a little bit more flair.  They’re super easy to make and we’ve got a template for you to help speed things along if you need them quickly.  Check out the tutorial!

For this DIY, you’ll need:

  • Cardstock
  • Paper Tassel Template (optional)
  • Paper cutting board
  • Scissors
  • Tape or craft glue
  • Ruler
  • Pencil

Paper tassel suppliesI’m going to show you how to create the template from scratch; but if you’re running low on time, feel free to download the template here.

Step 1:

Draw a horizontal line, lengthwise, in the center of the paper.

Step 2:

From the edge of the paper and 1/2 inch in, draw a vertical line down.  Repeat this step on the opposite end as well.

Step 3:

Look down at your paper, and make sure it’s laying horizontally.  Erase the small line that starts at the edge and meets the vertical line you just drew.

Step 4:

Now cut along all your lines.  You should now have 2 sections.  Each section will become one tassel.

Step 5:

Take one of those sections and begin cutting slits that are about 1/8″ wide, vertically up from the bottom.  I eyeballed this, but you can draw guidelines before cutting if you want it precise.  I’ve drawn a guideline to mark how high up I wanted to cut.  Just be sure not to cut too far up.  Leave about 1/2″ from the top.  Cut the slits all the way down to the end of the paper.  Repeat this with the other cardstock cutout.

Step 6:

Gently fold down the thin, top piece and tape it securely.  But be sure not to crease it.  You want it to be more of “loop” than a “fold.”

Step 7:

Starting from the end with the folded flap, begin rolling it around itself to form the tassel.  Be sure to roll it tightly and tape it securely at the end.  If you don’t like the length of the tassel, cut as much off as you want from the bottom.

And that’s it!  Style these tassels on a gift box for a friend or create fun garland with them for party decorations.

Ribbon-wrapped Gift Boxes

Before you wrap that Valentine’s Day gift for your loved one, consider this colorful ribbon-wrapping with floral accents.  Small, elegant touches with ribbon can give life and color to any ordinary gift box.  Try using thin ribbon as I did here to create a minor, yet eye-catching present for that special person.  This is a very simple craft, that makes a beautiful statement.

Supplies:

  • Gift boxes
  • Thin ribbon
  • Tape
  • Silk flowers
  • Hot glue and gun

Step 1:

Tape one end of the ribbon to the underside of the box, and bring it up and over to the other side of the box, making sure the ribbon is tight.  Secure the other end at the bottom with tape.

Step 2:

Repeat step 1, adding as many color and as many strips of ribbon as you like, making sure the ribbon is not loose and secured with tape at the bottom.

Step 3:

Remove the bloom from the stem on your silk flower.  Glue the flower to the top of the box.

These pretty flower boxes are great for bridal showers or weddings- the recipient will love how unique and personalized they are.  Be sure to tag us in your Instagram photos to let us know that you tried this lovely DIY!

XOXO Lipstick Wall Art

Hey ladies!  Add some colorful wall art to your bedroom or beauty studio using an unconventional writing tool: lipstick!  This simple DIY is bold – and can show off your favorite lipstick colors.  Check out one of our fun, beautiful DIYs for Valentine’s Day: XOXO Lipstick wall art.

Supplies:

  • (1) 11 x 14 White picture frame
  • 11×14 White poster board
  • Gold, metallic, acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Lipsticks (your choice of color)

Step 1:

This is optional, but if you want to add some color to the matte board inside the frame, paint it.  Here, I’ve chosen a gold, metallic paint from FolkArt.  For a seamless look, paint each side with vertical strokes, so that the brush pattern on the matte board is consistent.  Paint a couple of coats to ensure all of the white board is covered.  Set it aside to dry.  It should dry pretty quickly – this one dried in about 10 minutes.

Step 2:

While the matte board is drying, very lightly with a pencil, draw the XO pattern.  You’re only using this as a guide, so want to draw lightly – just enough to get an idea of where the letters will be.  If the strokes are too thick, it will show through the lipstick.

Step 3:

Grab two of your boldest, baddest lipstick colors.  Lightly trace the lines you have made with the pencil, creating the XO pattern.  Press down lightly, so that it does not break (you still want to use it afterwards)!

Step 4:

The lipstick does not need to dry, but you do want to make sure there aren’t any areas that are too thick because it may transfer on to the glass front of the frame.  I found that standing the frame up on a table and taping the image to the matte board that way, rather than laying it face down, helped keep it from transferring onto the glass.  Add the cardboard back to the frame and you’re ready to hang it!

XOXO Lipstick Art Spark and Chemistry
