DIY Stamped Tea Towels with Toilet Paper Rolls

I know Summer’s not here yet, but I couldn’t resist!  Here in DC, we’ve gone from 70 degree days to having a winter storm in one week!  But, I must keep focusing forward- at least Spring is finally here and as you can probably tell, I have been more than ready to do a few colorful DIYs.  These circle-stamped tea towels are super cute, and they use toilet paper rolls to do the trick.  Check out the tutorial below!

For this DIY, you’ll need:

  • White tea towels or fabric napkins
  • Toilet paper rolls
  • Circle sponge brush
  • Fabric paints
  • Scrap piece of cardboard or thick paper
  • Iron

Step 1:

Start by ironing your towels so that they are free of wrinkles.  I did not paint on the full towel, as they’re only being used for decorative purposes.  Fold the towel in half and slip a piece of cardboard or think paper between the fold so the paint does not seep through.

Step 2:

Choose your paint colors.  I’m using multi-surface, satin paints from Martha Stewart’s collection for this craft.  I chose pretty, bright colors that are eye-catching and remind me of Spring and Summer.  I squeezed the paint out in a circle pattern to make it easier for the toilet paper rolls to pick it up.

Step 3:

I have 4 colors, so I needed 4 toilet paper rolls.  You could use 2 rolls; but it’s definitely easier using 4- as you can stand the roll up after you stamp each one.  Dip the toilet paper roll in the paint.  Make sure the paint gets on the entire circle.

Step 4:

Here you can stamp any pattern you like- I chose to do straight lines across the towel.  Begin stamping the towel starting at one end.  Alternate colors and hold the rolls firmly, so that they stay in circle form as you stamp.

Step 5:

Continue stamping all the way to the end of the towel.

Step 6:

Using a small, round sponge brush, add smaller painted dots inside some of the circles.  Make sure the paper or cardboard is still underneath the towel when you do this step.

Step 7:

Let the paint dry according to manufacturer instructions.  These were completely dry in about 30 minutes.

Step 8:

Place another piece of fabric over top of the towel and iron it on a low setting to set the paint.

And that’s it!  Display these colorful tea towels at your next party or festive event!

DIY Burlap Favor Bags

Every party needs favors to give!  Instead of paper gift bags, try this DIY that might take a few minutes, but will be a long-lasting gift for your guests.  With paint, add a few stenciled, floral accents to plain burlap favor bags.  Instead of setting them to the side when the event is over, your guests can continue to use them to hold jewelry, toiletries, any other small items or knick knacks.

Supplies:

  • Burlap favor bags
  • Acrylic green and white paint
  • Sponge brush
  • Martha Stewart adhesive floral stencil

Step 1:

First, cut a small piece of cardstock, scrap paper or cardboard that is the same width as the bag.  Put it inside of the bag to prevent paint from transferring to the inside.

Step 3:

Choose the paint colors you prefer.  I had a few different green colors, but decided to go with the darker green and the white paint color combination.

Step 4:

Lay your stencil on the bag.  I like these adhesive stencils because they don’t shift around as you paint.  Even though it’s reused on the burlap, the adhesive isn’t removed when they are washed. Using up and down patting motions, cover the stencil with the white paint, being sure to cover all cutout areas of the stencil.

Step 5:

You can either stop here, if you like the singular color, or continue with the second paint selection to add more color.  Once you’ve stamped one bag, continue stamping the remainder of the bags with the same color.  Continue with the second color, stenciling each bag and placing them in different positions to add variety.

These bags should only take a few minutes to dry.  Use these as treat bags of gift bags at your next Spring party!

DIY Napkin Rings with Twine

Hey crafters!  I usually  skip the napkin ring section when I’m shopping at home decor stores because they tend to be overpriced or they don’t look very nice in general.  Before throwing my toilet paper rolls away, I decided to use them to make my own napkin rings with the craft supplies that I already had.  These simple, modern napkin rings, use a few supplies and cost me roughly $5 to make 10.  See how it’s done below:

Supplies:

  • Toilet paper rolls
  • Craft wood chips (or any embellishment topper preferred)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Painter’s tape
  • Hot glue and gun

Step 1:

Paint the wood chips any way you’d like.  I decided to paint a strip of white diagonally across each one.  Set them aside to dry for about 10 minutes.

Step 2:

While the chips are drying, cut each toilet paper roll in to roughly 1 inch increments.  These will be the basis for the napkin rings.

Step 3:

Using a hot glue gun, wrap the rope around the napkin ring.  Be very careful with the glue as to not burn yourself.  Wear protective gloves if needed.  When you get to the end, cut the end of the rope and use the glue gun’s tip to press the frayed ends down.

Step 4:

You can stop here if you prefer not to have an embellishment at the top of the rings, which I think looks nice, or you can add the wood chip to the top.

Step 5:

Glue the wood chips to the top of the rings and set aside to dry.

Add these to your table as a minimal, modern addition to each place setting.  They are truly unique and can be a great conversation starter with your dinner guests.  Happy DIY!

XOXO Lipstick Wall Art

Hey ladies! Did you just finish doing your wall with something like this peel and stick wallpaper and want to add a little more to it? Add some colorful wall art to your bedroom or beauty studio using an unconventional writing tool: lipstick! This simple DIY is bold – and can show off your favorite lipstick colors. Check out one of our fun, beautiful DIYs for Valentine’s Day: XOXO Lipstick wall art. For some, it might be more straightforward to know the difference between acrylic and canvas prints so you can buy the print you’d like so you can get that Lipstick wall art look but anyway back to making some ourselves!

Supplies:

  • (1) 11 x 14 White picture frame
  • 11×14 White poster board
  • Gold, metallic, acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Lipsticks (your choice of color)

Step 1:

This is optional, but if you want to add some color to the matte board inside the frame, paint it. Here, I’ve chosen a gold, metallic paint from FolkArt. For a seamless look, paint each side with vertical strokes, so that the brush pattern on the matte board is consistent. Paint a couple of coats to ensure all of the white board is covered. Set it aside to dry. It should dry pretty quickly – this one dried in about 10 minutes.

Step 2:

While the matte board is drying, very lightly with a pencil, draw the XO pattern. You’re only using this as a guide, so want to draw lightly – just enough to get an idea of where the letters will be. If the strokes are too thick, it will show through the lipstick.

Step 3:

Grab two of your boldest, baddest lipstick colors. Lightly trace the lines you have made with the pencil, creating the XO pattern. Press down lightly, so that it does not break (you still want to use it afterwards)!

Step 4:

The lipstick does not need to dry, but you do want to make sure there aren’t any areas that are too thick because it may transfer on to the glass front of the frame. I found that standing the frame up on a table and taping the image to the matte board that way, rather than laying it face down, helped keep it from transferring onto the glass. Add the cardboard back to the frame and you’re ready to hang it!
