How to Make Easter Bunny Treat Bags

DIY Easter bunny treat bags

Easter’s around the corner- and I know you’re all starting to collect all kinds of sweet treats for the kids.  Here’s a fun Easter craft that you can use to put all of your candy and small gifts in and it takes a very short time to make.  These cute bunny treat bags can be a great alternative to making a full basket of goodies and is also a great giveaway at the end of an Easter party.  Let’s start crafting!

For this DIY, you’ll need:

  • Mini brown paper treat bags
  • Cardstock
  • Ribbon
  • Permanent markers
  • Scissors
  • Pencil

Step 1:

First, draw the bunny ears at the top.  This is fairly simple and it doesn’t have to be perfect.  Just draw two slightly curved lines, down from the top corners of the bag and then a horizontal line in the middle to meet the two .

Step 2:

Draw your bunny face at the bottom.  Starting below the line that creases at the bottom of the bag, draw a bunny face.  I drew the face with a pencil first, and then traced it with a permanent marker.  Just in case I made a mistake, I could erase and draw it again.  There are so many different expressions you can draw- smiles, frowns, laughs, eyes open or closed, squinting- any face that you want!  This step is great for kids to get involved.  Be sure to draw the eyes, whiskers, a nose and mouth.

Step 3:

Cut along the lines created at the top to make the bunny ears.

Step 4:

Open the bag and unfold or flatten out the ears to give them their shape.

Step 5:

This is where I recommend inserting your sweet treats.  I also would suggest to put them in a smaller plastic bag or treat bag first, and then put them inside the brown bag to keep them secure.

Here’s the tricky part.  In order to get the ears to close together, pinch each ear separately first.  I found that this made the bag more malleable.  Then pinch both ears together as best as you can.  If the bag is a bit stiff, you’ll have to work with it a bit to get the ears to come together.  You don’t have to close them together tightly; but just enough so that they are touching.

Close it together with a twisty tie.  This is optional, but I found it very helpful to keep the ears together before putting the ribbon on.

Step 6:

Cut two ear inserts.  I didn’t use a template for this, because it’s very simple to do.  I just eyeballed it and drew two leaf-shapes on cardstock and cut them out.  Again, these don’t have to be perfectly shaped.  Tape or glue them to the insides of the bunny ears on the bag.  Taping them was much simpler and faster.

Step 7:

Tie a ribbon around the ears and remove the twisty tie if you choose.  And that’s it!

DIY Burlap Favor Bags

Every party needs favors to give!  Instead of paper gift bags, try this DIY that might take a few minutes, but will be a long-lasting gift for your guests.  With paint, add a few stenciled, floral accents to plain burlap favor bags.  Instead of setting them to the side when the event is over, your guests can continue to use them to hold jewelry, toiletries, any other small items or knick knacks.

Supplies:

  • Burlap favor bags
  • Acrylic green and white paint
  • Sponge brush
  • Martha Stewart adhesive floral stencil

Step 1:

First, cut a small piece of cardstock, scrap paper or cardboard that is the same width as the bag.  Put it inside of the bag to prevent paint from transferring to the inside.

Step 3:

Choose the paint colors you prefer.  I had a few different green colors, but decided to go with the darker green and the white paint color combination.

Step 4:

Lay your stencil on the bag.  I like these adhesive stencils because they don’t shift around as you paint.  Even though it’s reused on the burlap, the adhesive isn’t removed when they are washed. Using up and down patting motions, cover the stencil with the white paint, being sure to cover all cutout areas of the stencil.

Step 5:

You can either stop here, if you like the singular color, or continue with the second paint selection to add more color.  Once you’ve stamped one bag, continue stamping the remainder of the bags with the same color.  Continue with the second color, stenciling each bag and placing them in different positions to add variety.

These bags should only take a few minutes to dry.  Use these as treat bags of gift bags at your next Spring party!

Fa La Luxe: Favor Trays for your Holiday Party

Still trying to figure out what to give your guests for that last minute holiday party?  Well, even if you host it before or after Christmas, here’s a quick way to display those adorable candy favors.  We’re going to show you a simple way to turn your cardboard letters into glamorous favor trays that you can use as a table centerpiece or display on your buffet.  For this DIY you’ll need a few cardboard letters, a box cutter, glitter, mod podge, a small paintbrush, tissue paper and some candy favors.  You’ll also need to secure your favors with wire or twine, and any other table decorations to liven up the look.  Check it out!

Using the box cutter, cut the top layer of the cardboard letters very carefully.  A craft knife will work to, but it might take a little longer to complete.  Double teaming, Geneane and I finished these letters in a flash.  We actually started racing to see who could finish their letters first, which probably wasn’t the best idea since we were working with sharp tools, but I tell you, it is that simple.  Stick the pointed end at the corner of the letter and saw up and down until the top is completely cut off.

Next, clear out the cardboard fillers inside the letters (the “guts” as we like to call it).  These are the bare bones of your cardboard trays.

We used a gold craft glitter for this project, as it’s very luxe and shows pretty thick on the letters, which we liked.  A fine glitter would do just as well.  Mix 2 parts glitter to 1 part mod podge.  Swirl it around with your paintbrush and begin applying the first layer to the outer edges of the letter.

Once the first layer is somewhat dry, you may still see a few holes or gaps in the glitter where the cardboard shows through.  Apply a second coat of mod podge on the outer edges again, but this time, gently pour the glitter directly on top.  Some of the excess will fall off, like it did on your elementary school projects, but follow it up by patting the sides with the paintbrush.

Pick your choice of holiday candy.  Simply wrap it in tissue paper and secure it with twine.

Place the candy favors inside the letter close to each other so it will appear full and dense.

That’s it!  Play around with the tissue paper color choices that fit your party’s theme.  You can also fill the trays directly with candy or any other type of favor that you want.  We love the dazzling gold glitter on the sides- when your guests sit at the table, they can see it pretty easily and their favors are just within arm’s reach.  We also love DIYs that serve more than one purpose.  This one’s pretty easy, and pretty pretty, too!  Happy holidays!
