SUPPLIES:
  • Plain t-shirt or sweatshirt
  • Stretch and thin sequin trim (sold by the yard)
  • Scissors
  • Permanent Fabric Glue
  • Needle & Thread*
  • White or Black gel pen
  • Ruler

*Match your thread to the color of your sequins.

sequin_tshirt_2If you have an old shirt in your wardrobe that doesn’t ever get worn, now’s the time to jazz it up! You can easily create a funky new shirt with only a few materials. You can use embroidery designs for intricate designs or you can use sequins to create a bigger masterpiece. If you’re thinking of writing a fun phrase like “Cheers!” or “Shine On,” begin by measuring your shirt with the ruler. Determine your center and then mark with a small dot where you want to begin and end your phrase.

Now carefully and neatly write the words in the center of the shirt. If you don’t quite trust yourself to write cleanly, just lay your sequin trim down on the shirt WITHOUT the glue. This allows you to carefully adjust your sequins until you have the exact layout you want

sequin_tshirt_1PictureCarefully begin to apply your fabric glue on your shirt over your written lettering. Not many people have fabric glue ready to use for any project so you might need to order some online. Take a look at this guide on finding the best fabric glue for patches because trim will work the same way as patches. You’ll want to move slowly, using a small amount of glue at a time and then pressing your sequin trim down on top of the glue to secure it in place.

Now, add an outer layer to your phrase, only slightly overlapping your first layer.

Using your needle and thread, sew down the highest and lowest points of each letter. For capital letters (like our “S” in shine), reinforce the center of the letter and the points where the sequins overlap.

The key to this craft is taking your time. If you apply your glue carefully, you can cover up small mistakes and readjust your lines as you go.

If you’re trying out the chevron sequin design, you’ll need to purchase an inch-wide stretch sequin trim. Choose two or three different colors. Measure your shirt, find your center, and draw a small dot on your shirt. This will mark the center of your first chevron.

sequin_tshirt_42. Cut two 8-inch strips and glue at an angle on your shirt so that the two strips form a slight “V.” Do the same with each color spacing each chevron about 2 inches apart. Slowly begin gluing down your trim, using your glue sparingly.

3. Repeat Step 2 to create a second layer that will slightly overlap your first layer to make thicker chevrons.

4. Now trim the ends so that your chevrons have straight edges. You may find that some of the sequins fall off in the process, but you can clean up the ends by gluing back on individual sequins. Sew down these individual pieces so that they don’t fall off in the wash.

5. Sew down the edges of your chevron and continue down the shape, sewing about every inch or so.

sequin_tshirt_5As you go along, you can cover up any imperfections by using leftover sequin trim, cutting small bits, and placing them over the flaws. This may be useful in the center of your chevron where the two points meet.

T-shirt Cup Cozy

how-to-make-tshirt-cup-cozy-craftgawker
As winter comes to a close (yay!), I wanted to squeeze in a quick and easy craft suitable for the last few chilly weeks we may have. In Maryland, you never know what you’re going to get. The end of March is supposed to be the start of Spring, but it’s not uncommon to still see brisk weather. So, to end the winter season, I’ve created a simple cup cozy that I made from old t-shirts. At first I wanted to create another t-shirt necklace, but I decided to try something a little different. Traditionally, cup cozies sit flat against the cup, however this cozy sits out a bit. At first glance it may look bulky, but as you’re creating this, you will find that you control the thickness. It can be as thin or as thick as your hands can hold. So, if you have some old t-shirts, use them for this DIY before deciding to throw them out!

For this DIY, you’ll need:

  • Old t-shirts
  • Fabric glue or hot glue and gun
  • Tiny elastics
  • Painter’s tape
  • Scissors

Begin cutting your t-shirt width-wise. I cut up just about the whole t-shirt, but you won’t even need half of this for the project.

Make sure to cut off the ends of the t-shirt strips as well.

Grab four strips of each color and tape the tops down to allow for easy twisting. This is the part where you control its thickness. If your cup is already pretty bulky, try only using two t-shirt strips of each color. Make sure you measure the circumference of the cup so you know how long your strips should be. My strips were about 10 inches in length.

To create the rope twist, twist each individual color towards the right, and then twist them both together in the left direction.

Remove the tape, and temporarily secure both ends with an elastic band so it won’t come loose.

Create about five of these t-shirt braids. If you wanted your cozy to be thinner, and so you only twisted with two strips instead of four, you will need to make more of these (probably 7 or 8). Glue the strips together, side by side with fabric glue. Now, it doesn’t really matter which glue you use as lot as it’s a strong one. If you know your glue isn’t going to stick or hold its position, I would recommend visiting Chemicalwiki.com and taking a look at the glues they have on offer. The better the glue, the longer your creation will last! Once the glue is dry, cut off the elastic bands (it should still be secured together). Though, it’s not a big deal to leave the elastics on because you’re covering them anyway. Your choice. Cut a small strip of t-shirt fabric for the closure.

As you can see, the closure needs to be long and wide enough to wrap around the ends of the cozy. For me, that was about 7″ long and 1″ wide. Glue the closure around the ends of the cozy to secure it. Let the glue dry, and you’re done!

If you get all the way to the end and you find that it’s too thick for your liking, no worries, you have a whole pile of t-shirt strips to try again with. Or, you can use it as a cute fabric bracelet! Happy DIY!
