Luxe Makeup Storage Trays

If you’re looking for a DIY project to help you empty out that drawer full of knick knacks, try creating these adorable and chic storage trays to get you organized.  Using only shoeboxes, I made these to store my makeup.  It’s a great way to reuse them instead of tossing them away, and not to mention, it might be a great excuse to buy more shoes! Check it out!

Selecting the type of box tops you use is crucial to making this DIY functional.  For one drawer insert, you’ll need at least two box tops.  Though we’ll show you a basic type of insert, you can create multiple types depending on what you need to store.

Supplies:

  • Shoeboxes and tops
  • Spray paint
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife
  • Hot glue gun with glue

Luxe Drawer Dividers Spark and Chemistry 2

First, you’ll need to select two shoebox tops.  One needs to be able to fit pretty snug inside of the other.  This will be crucial as we get further along in the project.

Begin by covering the box tops with spray paint.  Though this is optional, I think they look best with a bright, metallic color rather than its original look.  Be sure to coat the entire top to hide the manufacturer logo and other colors underneath.

Flip the box top so that the manufacturer logo is up, and draw a line across it.  Cut along that line using the craft knife and a pair of scissors.  I found that an X-acto knife worked extremely well when turning the corners and cutting through the thick cardboard.

Draw another line along the center of the top and cut along that line as well.  You should now have four pieces.  Flip those pieces over on their backs and glue them all together with hot glue.

Place the insert into another shoebox top.  It should fit pretty snug- if not cut off some of the ends with the X-acto knife for sharp, clean lines.

You can make a variety of different insert types to fit your storage needs.  You may need more than two box tops if you decide to make more complicated insert types.  There’s no limit to the amount of trays you can make and they are very handy for storing those small items that get stuffed in the bottom of your drawers.  Leave us a comment below and let us know what you think!

T-shirt Cup Cozy

how-to-make-tshirt-cup-cozy-craftgawker
As winter comes to a close (yay!), I wanted to squeeze in a quick and easy craft suitable for the last few chilly weeks we may have. In Maryland, you never know what you’re going to get. The end of March is supposed to be the start of Spring, but it’s not uncommon to still see brisk weather. So, to end the winter season, I’ve created a simple cup cozy that I made from old t-shirts. At first I wanted to create another t-shirt necklace, but I decided to try something a little different. Traditionally, cup cozies sit flat against the cup, however this cozy sits out a bit. At first glance it may look bulky, but as you’re creating this, you will find that you control the thickness. It can be as thin or as thick as your hands can hold. So, if you have some old t-shirts, use them for this DIY before deciding to throw them out!

For this DIY, you’ll need:

  • Old t-shirts
  • Fabric glue or hot glue and gun
  • Tiny elastics
  • Painter’s tape
  • Scissors

Begin cutting your t-shirt width-wise. I cut up just about the whole t-shirt, but you won’t even need half of this for the project.
how-to-make-tshirt-cup-cozy-4
Make sure to cut off the ends of the t-shirt strips as well.
how-to-make-tshirt-cup-cozy-5
Grab four strips of each color and tape the tops down to allow for easy twisting. This is the part where you control its thickness. If your cup is already pretty bulky, try only using two t-shirt strips of each color. Make sure you measure the circumference of the cup so you know how long your strips should be. My strips were about 10 inches in length.

To create the rope twist, twist each individual color towards the right, and then twist them both together in the left direction.

Remove the tape, and temporarily secure both ends with an elastic band so it won’t come loose.

Create about five of these t-shirt braids. If you wanted your cozy to be thinner, and so you only twisted with two strips instead of four, you will need to make more of these (probably 7 or 8). Glue the strips together, side by side with fabric glue. Now, it doesn’t really matter which glue you use as lot as it’s a strong one. If you know your glue isn’t going to stick or hold its position, I would recommend visiting Chemicalwiki.com and taking a look at the glues they have on offer. The better the glue, the longer your creation will last! Once the glue is dry, cut off the elastic bands (it should still be secured together). Though, it’s not a big deal to leave the elastics on because you’re covering them anyway. Your choice. Cut a small strip of t-shirt fabric for the closure.
how-to-make-tshirt-cup-cozy-14how-to-make-tshirt-cup-cozy-13
As you can see, the closure needs to be long and wide enough to wrap around the ends of the cozy. For me, that was about 7″ long and 1″ wide. Glue the closure around the ends of the cozy to secure it. Let the glue dry, and you’re done!

If you get all the way to the end and you find that it’s too thick for your liking, no worries, you have a whole pile of t-shirt strips to try again with. Or, you can use it as a cute fabric bracelet! Happy DIY!

Upcycle Your Old Greeting Cards

upcycled-post-card-spark-and-chemistry-blog-7

If you still have cards in storage from years ago, why not put them to use again? If you need a quick way to send out a message to your loved ones, instead of going out to buy a pack of new postcards, try to find some old greeting cards to reuse and send. You know here, we always find a way to reuse before tossing. If you don’t save your greeting cards, here’s a simple craft to get you to start. For this 5-minute DIY, you can use birthday cards, Christmas cards, or for this example we’ll be using Valentine’s Day cards. if you have a friends birthday coming up soon then it would be the perfect time to try out this awesome new technique. Although, if you are in need of more birthday card ideas then you could go to https://craftyclub.co/!
upcycled-post-card-spark-and-chemistry-blog-2

First, gather your supplies. You will need:

  • A greeting card of your choice (the inner left page of the card should have no text on it)
  • Craft knife
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Pen
  • Cutting mat/board
  • Stamp
upcycled-post-card-spark-and-chemistry-blog-3

On your cutting board or mat, and with the ruler as your guide, cut down the middle of the card along the fold. You should now have two separate pieces. As you can see, the inner-left page of the card is blank. The blank side will be used for the postcard. The other side you can continue to save, or toss.

upcycled-post-card-spark-and-chemistry-blog-4

Go ahead and create your lines for the postcard with a pencil. Turn the page horizontally and after measuring to find the center, draw a vertical line down the middle of the card. Draw four horizontal lines on the right side of the line you first drew, keeping everything centered. If you need to view a postcard before drawing, do so. Go back over these lines with a pen. I used a Sharpie fine point pen and it looked great.

Now you’re ready to write your sentiments and you’re all done! You have an instant postcard you can tell the recipient that you created from another greeting card. This makes me want to send postcards to everybody, now! HAPPY DIY!

Upcycle Shopping Bags for Gift Wrap

shopping-bags-gift-wrap-spark-and-chemistry-blog
Time to start wrapping those gifts for the holidays!  Here we’re going to show you how to upcycle all of those super cute brown paper bags (and other bags too) to use them as gift wrap.  This is a great way to recycle; and depending on where you shop, you can get a great variety of different shapes, colors, and styles for bags to use in this DIY.  Try to keep them in tact and as neat as possible until you’re ready to do this DIY project

shopping-bags-spark-and-chemistry-2

Gather your ribbon, twine, buttons and tags to finish off the package. We kept our decorating minimal to keep the style from becoming to gaudy. The brown paper packaging calls for a natural simplicity, so we like to emphasize the rawness of the material by using rope twine and baker’s twine. In the image below, we used a thin paper bag from Grey Moggie Press and made our gift tag using a torn page from a novel.

For packages with bold designs, be sure to boast those features that make it unique. For instance, the bag above has creative lettering and mixed type. You don’t have to turn this bag inside out. Instead, show off the recognizable design. Trust me, your friends and family are sure to love it.
When folding your bags, you’ll find that some may be more malleable than others. For those bags that are a bit more challenging to fold, you may want to use hot glue or crazy glue to hold your folds in place.  Also, try to find unique ways to fold the packaging.  You may find that a less conventional way of packaging looks better and is easier to wrap.

And you don’t necessarily have to wrap a specific gift with the corresponding store bag. For instance, we wrapped a book of poetry in a store makeup bag. This will ensure that your gift is a real surprise! Or you can simply wrap the gift inside the bag it came in, like we did with the bag from one of our favorite clothing stores.

We love the crazy design and text on this restaurant bag below.  It’s great for masculine-inspired gift wrap!

Use rubber stamping to enhance your design.  Also, try wrapping using different shapes instead of the traditional square and rectangular packaging.

We love this DIY because it’s super creative and you’re also reusing bags that otherwise may have been thrown in the trash!  Have fun with it and share this post with your friends!  Happy DIY from Spark and Chemistry!
